FAQS

HOW LONG DOES A NOTARIAL APPOINTMENT TAKE?

Most notarial appointments typically take 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the complexity and number of documents involved. For matters requiring more detailed attention, we’ll advise you of any additional time needed at the time of booking.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING TO MY APPOINTMENT?

Please ensure you bring the following:

  • The document(s) to be notarised
  • Valid photographic ID—such as a passport or driving licence
  • Proof of address—e.g. utility bill or bank statement, dated within the last 3 months

Depending on the nature of the service, you may be asked to provide additional documentation. If you’re unsure, feel free to ask when booking your appointment.

WHAT IS A NOTARY PUBLIC, AND HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM A SOLICITOR?

A Notary Public (also known as a Notary or Public Notary) is a qualified legal professional authorised to certify, authenticate, and witness documents for use in foreign jurisdictions. Notarial acts are recognised internationally and are often required for legal, commercial, or personal matters abroad.
While Abraham is also a solicitor, notarial work is governed by distinct regulations and serves a different purpose. Solicitors typically handle domestic legal matters such as conveyancing, litigation, or family law. In contrast, notaries specialise in cross-border legal formalities, ensuring that documents meet the requirements of overseas authorities.

CAN I JUST GET MY DOCUMENT WITNESSED BY A SOLICITOR INSTEAD?

In some cases, a solicitor’s certification may be sufficient—but if your document is intended for use outside the UK, it will often need to be notarised by a Notary Public. Many foreign authorities do not accept solicitor-certified documents, especially for legal, commercial, or immigration purposes. If you’re unsure, it’s best to check with the requesting organisation or feel free to ask us for guidance. We’re happy to advise on whether notarisation is required for your specific situation.

DO YOU OFFER SAME-DAY OR URGENT APPOINTMENTS?

Yes, same-day appointments are often available. If you’re working to a deadline or have an urgent matter, please let us know as soon as possible. We’ll always do our best to accommodate your needs promptly and efficiently.

CAN YOU ARRANGE AN APOSTILLE OR LEGALISATION?

Yes, we can advise on and assist with the apostille process through the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Where required, we can also arrange consular legalisation for documents destined for countries that are not part of the Hague Apostille Convention. Please note that turnaround times vary depending on the destination country, the type of document, and the service level selected. If you’re working to a deadline, let us know and we’ll guide you through the most efficient options available.

DO I NEED TO ATTEND IN PERSON?

In most cases, yes. Notarial work typically requires us to verify your identity and witness your signature in person. This is a legal requirement under English law, especially for documents intended for international use. Remote or online notarisation is generally not accepted by foreign authorities, so attending in person ensures your documents meet the necessary legal standards.

DO YOU OFFER HOME OR OFFICE VISITS?

Yes, we offer mobile notary services across England, subject to availability. This can be especially helpful for:

  • Elderly clients or those with mobility challenges
  • Busy professionals with limited time
  • Company signings requiring on-site notarisation

Please note that additional travel fees may apply, depending on location and urgency. If you’d like to arrange a visit, just let us know your preferred time and place—we’ll do our best to accommodate

HOW MUCH DOES NOTARIAL WORK COST?

Fees vary depending on several factors, including:

  • Type of document
  • Word count or size
  • Number of documents
  • Urgency or turnaround time
  • Complexity of the matter

We’re happy to provide a clear and tailored quote once we’ve reviewed your documents and requirements. For commonly requested services, we offer competitive fixed fees to keep things simple and transparent.

WHAT TYPES OF DOCUMENTS CAN YOU NOTARISE?

We can notarise a wide range of documents, including but not limited to:

  • Powers of attorney
  • Statutory declarations and affidavits
  • Academic certificates and transcripts
  • Company incorporation and business documents
  • Travel consent letters for minors
  • Adoption, marriage, and property-related paperwork

If  you’re unsure whether your document requires notarisation, feel free to get in touch for guidance. We’re happy to advise based on your specific needs and the requirements of the receiving jurisdiction.

Which countries accept Apostilles?

The Apostille Convention (formally the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961 Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents) streamlines the process of authenticating documents for use abroad. As of now, 127 countries are contracting parties to this convention, meaning they accept apostilles in place of consular legalisation.

Examples of Apostille-Accepting Countries Include:

  • United Kingdom
  • United States
  • France
  • Japan
  • Australia
  • India
  • Brazil
  • South Africa
  • Mexico
  • Germany …and many more.

If a country is not a member of the Apostille Convention, documents typically require consular legalisation, which involves authentication by the foreign embassy or consulate. Examples include:

  • China (mainland)
  • Canada (joined recently, so check specific implementation dates)
  • Most Middle Eastern countries (e.g. UAE, Qatar, Kuwait)
  • Some African nations

To check the specific requirements for your destination country—including whether it accepts an apostille or requires consular legalisation—you can refer to the official HCCH status table. It lists all contracting parties and their entry dates into the convention.

If you’d like, I can help you look up a specific country or walk you through the legalisation process for your document.
